The Klickitat County Fairboard is pleased to announce Marie and Dean Miller as the 2019 KCFR Grand Marshals.
Dean and Marie Miller are lifelong residents of Klickitat County residing in Bickleton. As Dean is fond of saying “on the east side along with the rest of the country”. Dean and Marie are the parents of Jamie Miller Mercer and grandparents of Chelsey Eagy, Patrick Mercer and Emily Schneeman. They are also
the Great Grand Parents of Cassidy and Delany Eagy. Both Dean and Marie are alumni of Bickleton High school. Both were active in extracurricular activities. Dean served his country in the United States Army from 1960 until his discharge in 1963. Marie attended college in Yakima after graduation. Dean and Marie met at the 55 th Pioneer Picnic and Rodeo.
Dean and Marie were married in Bickleton on the 15th of January. They returned home after their honeymoon only to find out that a blizzard had come and snowed their front house door shut. Their Chivalry was one that went down in the history books as one of the most successful Chivalry’s ever in Bickleton. For months afterwards every time the furnace fired up cans of food would roll through the ducts from one end of the house to the other. It’s most likely still a great source of pride for whoever did it.
Dean and Marie’s involvement in their local community is well known and greatly appreciated by all that live in Bickleton. They are both Fifty plus years members of the Alder Creek Grange. Both have been active Volunteer Firefighters for Klickitat County Fire District #2. Dean served for 14 years as a Bickleton
School Board Member. Marie has been active in the Schools BSBA organization for over 50 years. Marie has also been an active member of the Alder Rebekah’s for over 50 years. In 1987 Dean and Marie were the Klickitat County Cattlemen of the year. For 15 years Marie took part in making the Bickleton
Goodwill Society annual quilt. They have both been active members of the Alder Creek Pioneer Picnic Association serving as president in 2015. This May Marie was nominated and awarded a Community Leadership Award sponsored by Educational Service District 105.
Marie’s and Dean’s involvement in the Klickitat County Fair and Rodeo started when Marie and Dean became the 4-H leaders of the Bickleton Hilltopper’s in 1981. Market Steers, hogs, sheep, rabbits, and still life and baking project they have almost done it all. The best guess is that they have lead, mentored and hauled hundreds of children and animals over their 4-H career. If you were to try and complement either one of them for their service and dedication as 4-H leaders they would just shrug and say it wasn’t anything and change subject.
Dean and Marie also participated in other fairs with their 4-H kids such as Grandview, Toppenish and the granddaddy of them all Denver.
Dean’s hobbies are golf and cattle, Marie’s hobbies are quilting and her 4-H kids. Dean and Marie would like to thank the Klickitat County Fair and Rodeo Board members for selecting them as the 2019 Grand Marshals.
